Maylarch commits to Cameron Tweedle sailing
Maylarch has signed a new sponsorship agreement with Cameron Tweedle for 2016/17 to allow him to continue his progress in the Finn Class. Cameron’s 2nd season in the Finn has been remarkable.Aged only 17, he has risen to the top of the newly formed UK Finn Under 23 Squad whom he regularly trains with at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.
His results in 2016 are a result of his dedication, determination and focus, especially when you consider that the early portion of the year involved him recovering from a serious ankle ligament injury that prevented him from regaining full fitness until April of this year.
The weekend of 22/23 Oct saw the final UK Finn Open event of the year where Cameron was presented with the prestigious UK Finn Traveller’s Trophy by Olympic Gold Medallist, Finn Class Rio 2016, Giles Scott. Cameron won the Series with an event to spare.
Cameron has also experienced European travel this year with the Europeans in Barcelona and the Junior Worlds in Denmark.A change in the age rules for the Silver Cup (now the Finn U23 World Champs) meant that most of last years’ top (older) competitors were back again, making it a tough assignment for Cameron to improve on his position of 26th last year, but in a fantastic series of races that included a 2nd place in Race 3, he achieved 19th Overall and top U18 in the world. That 2nd place exemplified Cameron’s mature attitude to racing; having fought through the fleet, consolidated 2nd place and closed in on the leader, he sailed a controlled final downwind leg, resisting the temptation to push the rules too far and risk a jury penalty.
Simon Ward – MD – said ‘Cameron has taken a massive leap forward in all areas of his sailing career in the past 12 months and we are proud to be able to support him as he trains and competes both Nationally and Internationally over the next year’
Cameron’s targets are now to develop further within the U23 Squad training programme and be picked up to train alongside the Olympic Squad, in order to achieve his goal of representing and winning for Great Britain at the Olympics, be that 2020, 2024 or beyond.
